Taking the aesthetic of early ’90s Creation Records mixed with the ethics and energy of the first Merge Records releases, Kestrels have forged their sound. The trio cut their teeth as a ferociously loud live act, so it’s no surprise that their records sound great turned all the way up. They're also detailed and expansive enough to reward late-night headphone excursions.
After penning a string of fuzz pop gems and solidifying their lineup & sound on 2012's acclaimed A Ghost History (Sonic Unyon), Halifax's Kestrels — guitarist-vocalist Chad Peck, bassist Devin Peck, and drummer Paul Brown — entered Toronto's Dreamhouse Studios in the summer of 2013 with Alex Bonenfant (METZ, Crystal Castles) at the helm. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Wild Nothing, Temples, Interpol), the four songs making up their The Moon Is Shining Our Way EP fully captures the force of the band's live show that has seen them tour with the likes of Speedy Ortiz and Ringo Deathstarr and blends it with their spin of noise with melody. That material hints at the band's enormous artistic growth, an evolution showcased on their upcoming self-titled full-length.
