Terra Lightfoot Premieres Music Video "Norma Gale" Via The Boot’s Story Behind the Song

Critically acclaimed songwriter Terra Lightfoot has shared a new music video for the track "Norma Gale", a poignant fan favourite from her latest release, New Mistakes. The video premiered today via The Boot, a Nashville website focused on the songwriting and country music scenes, as part of their feature 'Story Behind the Song', an entry that has hosted the likes of Darius Rucker, Big & Rich, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean and more.

Of the song's subject, Lightfoot says: "I was inspired to write this song after meeting a living legend from the 1970s country scene, a Canadian woman named Norma Gale who was a near-famous country star. She played all over the world, but specifically had a great following in Nashville, where she played with Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. This song chronicles the life of Norma as a musician in the ’70s, and trying to bring up her young son while she's gunning for sustainable success."

The video, directed by Mitch Barnes, follows Gale's path through the 1970s Nashville music scene with photos and imagery from her life, drawing on extensive photo archives shared by the estate of the late  songwriter.

"I was playing a show in New Brunswick and Norma's son Marc had come out with his wife. After the show I met him and we got chatting, and I found out his mom was a pretty famous musician in the ’70s. He told me she was in the hospital and asked if I'd like to meet her the next day. I agreed, and the song is based on the stories she told me on the day I met with her, and some background from her son, who I've become friends with over the last couple of years. I wrote this song to tell Norma's story, to share her successes and her hardships, and most of all to chronicle the unique relationship between Norma and her son Marc, who she raised all on her own while touring across the world as a single mom," Lightfoot adds. "I kept in touch with Norma and her son and reached out when I finally made it to Nashville myself to do some songwriting, but unfortunately she had passed away two weeks earlier."

The video is currently streaming on The Boot.

With New Mistakes, Lightfoot offers up something rare: the kind of genuine document that can only come from a road-tested breed of songwriter and performer. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful, bluesy soul, vivid lyrics and ferocious six-string virtuosity, it’s an unforgettable outing. From the ground-shaking stomp of “Paradise” — whose video premiered via American Songwriter — and wild-eyed energy of “Pinball King” that open the set to the psychedelic, gospel-tinged album closer “Lonesome Eyes,” the steeltown native’s third record distills her masterful talent to its electrifying essence.

Produced by Gus van Go and Werner F (Arkells, Sam Roberts Band, Wintersleep), New Mistakes is a heady journey. As poignant as it is rollicking and vulnerable as it is rowdy, it cruises long and sometimes lonesome highways that lead everywhere from brokedown dive bars and endless prairie skies to mountain ranges and the Mojave Desert. Built around Lightfoot’s killer live band, the session impresses on all counts. It’s Lightfoot’s hungriest and most raw album to date, able to mesmerize with graceful melodies one moment, and step into the ring to deliver a hurricane of hooks or a heart-wrenching chorus the next.
